CIE's Peer Mentor Program

Information for Mentors

Are you planning to go abroad or have recently returned from abroad and are interested in meeting international students from all over the world?

The Center for International Education is offering EAP and IOP students the opportunity to serve as a Peer Mentor to an EAP Reciprocity Exchange student who will be coming to study at UCI in Winter 2008.

EAP Reciprocity Exchange Students come from over 30 different countries where EAP has international exchanges and attend the University of California for up to one academic year. Participating in the mentor program will give you the chance to meet and become friends with an EAP Reciprocity Student. As a Peer Mentor, you will also serve as an invaluable source of information for new Reciprocity Students who have questions and concerns.

How does the program work?

  • If you are interested in participating in the program, please complete and submit the Web Application Form by MONDAY, DECEMBER 17th.
  • Once we've received your application, you will be assigned to an EAP Reciprocity Student based on the information you have provided on your application. You will be sent information about the student to whom you are matched with via email. Please note that we will do our best to match you with an EAP Reciprocity student although this is not guaranteed and will be dependent on the number of participants in the program.
  • Please plan to attend a short Peer Mentor Training Meeting on Thursday, January 3rd from 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. in Student Services II, room 1010 A&B where you will have the chance to meet the student to whom you are assigned and can make arrangements to get together. If you are unable to attend this meeting, please contact CIE at cie@uci.edu to make alternative arrangements to meet with your Mentee.
  • You and your Mentee will agree where, when and how often you want to meet and your level of involvement with one another will be up to you and your Mentee. At the minimum, you could give him/her a tour of the campus, explain how things work on campus and be available to answer any questions. You are not expected to know all the answers but can help the student to find out and can make him/her feel welcome and know that there’s a friendly face on campus.

Thank you for your interest in the program and please feel free to contact CIE if you have any questions at: cie@uci.edu
