HOW TO GET CREDIT
Careful academic planning is essential in order
to obtain appropriate credit for study abroad.
Will I get credit?
EAP and UCI Travel-Study
- Yes …you will receive UCI credit. Units, course titles, and grades are posted on your UCI transcript.
IOP Study
- Yes …you can receive transfer credit from programs that provide a transcript from a U.S. or foreign University. Course titles and grades will appear on the host university’s transcript. Units will be posted on your UCI transcript.
IOP Non-Study
- No …you can only receive credit for study programs.
What else should I know about credit?
EAP and UCI Travel-Study
- The UCI Residence Requirement states that students must take 36 of their final 45 units of work immediately preceding graduation in residence at UCI. EAP and UCI Travel-Study courses are UC courses and therefore are considered "in-residence".
IOP Study
- The UCI Residence Requirement states that students must take 36 of their final 45 units of work immediately preceding graduation in residence at UCI. Exceptions to this requirement may be allowed for IOP students upon approval by their School via the International Study Advance Contract.
- There are no limitations to the total number of units that can be transferred to UCI from a 4-year U.S. accredited institution. There are limitations to the total number of units that can be transferred to UCI from a community college (no more than 105).
Can I fulfill degree requirements?
EAP, UCI Travel-Study, and IOP Study
- Yes …you can fulfill UCI degree requirements (major, minor, breadth, or elective). Follow the steps below.
BEFORE DEPARTURE
- Know the requirements you need to fulfill (See the link on the Study Abroad in Your Major web site; your academic department’s web site; or in the UCI General Catalogue.)
- Locate the course offerings of the program you are considering. Most are accessible from the program's web site. EAP applicants should use the Researching EAP Courses web page. (Get help from an IPA or CIE Staff Advisor as needed.)
- Determine if the courses offered seem roughly equivalent to the courses you need to fulfill requirements. Compare course titles, course descriptions, levels (i.e. upper or lower division), etc. Note: Classes on UCI Travel-Study are all regular UCI classes. Remaining steps below are not required.
- If you cannot find the course offerings or you cannot figure out whether or not the courses are similar to the courses you need, make an appointment with a CIE Staff Advisor.
- Meet with your Academic Counselor in the school of your major (see list below) to complete the EAP Academic Planning form (part of the EAP application) or IOP International Study Advance Contract (one of the IOP Forms). Your Academic Counselor will make the final and official determination regarding which courses will count for which degree requirements.
WHILE ABROAD
EAP and IOP Study Programs
- E-mail your Academic Counselor if you have questions about which courses to enroll in or how specific courses may count toward your UCI degree requirements.
- Keep all work done in classes for which you expect to get credit towards specific requirements. Also keep course descriptions, syllabi and reading lists. (If you take a course that does not have a syllabus, keep track of all readings, topics covered in class, papers written and exams taken.)
- Bring ALL of the above back to UCI with you. This is precious cargo!
UPON RETURN
EAP and IOP Study Programs
- After credit has been posted to your UCI transcript, meet with your Academic Counselor to determine and/or verify the credit you will receive toward particular requirements.
Follow whatever procedure is required for your School (i.e. File a petition, if required).
