IOP PRE-DEPARTURE REQUIREMENTS
SUMMER OR FALL 2008 DEPARTURES
Congratulations and welcome to IOP! Returned students will tell you that all of your pre-departure preparations (e.g. attending orientation, talking with returnees or native students and getting all your paperwork organized) will really help you to get the most out of your time abroad!
Questions???
- If you have specific questions about your IOP program (e.g. housing, fees, airfare), contact your IOP sponsoring program directly.
- If you have questions about your IOP participation in relation to UCI, review this web page thoroughly.
- If you still have questions after reading thoroughly, contact CIE for assistance.
Check Your UCI E-mail Account Daily for messages related to your participation on IOP. Be sure messages from CIE are not filtered into a "junk" mailbox and your account is not over quota. If you are having any problems accessing your UCI e-mail account, contact NACS for assistance at: Contact NACS.
IOP Forms
All IOP Participants must complete and return the following IOP Forms. If you have NOT picked up your IOP Forms and Information from our office, please come by ASAP to get them. No appointment is necessary.
- Confirmation Form: access via online via IOP Forms and Information web link, available at CIE.
- Waiver: access via online IOP Forms and Information web link, available at CIE.
- Advance Study Contract: complete only if you are going on a study program. Process can take 3-4 weeks, so get started immediately! Hard copy form available at CIE.
- Readmission Application: complete only if you will be gone during the academic year and are planning to enroll at UCI upon your return. Not necessary for summer programs. Hard copy form available at CIE.
Apply to your IOP Program Directly
- Many IOP program applications can be found on the sponsoring program's web site, or can be obtained by contacting the program directly. You may want to complete the required IOP forms before paying any application fees to your IOP program if you need to receive transfer credit, to verify that credit will be accepted by UCI. Pay close attention to your program’s application deadline. If you miss a deadline, you are encouraged to contact the program and ask if they will still accept your application – some IOP programs will accept late applications if space is still available.

Learn About Your Country
- NOW is the time to start learning about the country to which you are going. Preparation is an important component of going abroad. The more you prepare, the better off you will be when you arrive in your host country!
- The How to Prepare link on the CIE web site contains a lot of web sites you can use to learn about your host country, especially Know Your Hosts and Travel Issues.
- Another good resource is talking to past participants. See Contacts List below.
Airline Ticket
- After you have been accepted to your program and know the official dates, you can buy your airline ticket. Advice on buying airline tickets can be found on the CIE web site at: Getting There.
Passport
- A valid passport is required for all participants. If you do not currently have a passport that is valid until at least three months after the end of your program, apply for one immediately. Routine passport processing takes 8 weeks. UCI Passport Office.
- The name on your passport MUST be the same name that appears on all of your IOP paperwork. It must be the same one registered with the Office of Financial Aid, Registrar, your academic unit, etc. You must not officially change your name during IOP processing.
Non-U.S. Citizens
- Non-U.S. citizens must obtain a passport from the embassy of their country of citizenship. The name on your passport MUST be the same name that appears on all of your IOP paperwork. It must be the same one registered with the Office of Financial Aid, Registrar, your academic unit, etc. You must not officially change your name during IOP processing. Non-U.S. citizens should immediately contact the consulate of your host country to inquire as to the paperwork necessary to obtain a visa. Processing can take up to 6 months. If you are considering applying for U.S. citizenship, or are already in the process, make an appointment with a CIE Advisor immediately.
- For more information, see: Travel Documents.
Verify Your Health Insurance
- Making sure that you have adequate health/medical insurance coverage during your time abroad is an essential part of preparing for your international adventure. If you currently carry insurance or your parents' policy covers you, please make sure that the policy will be in effect during your travels and that you have sufficient health coverage while abroad.
- For more information, see: Health Insurance.
Students With Disabilities
- If you require special additional assistance to obtain equal access to the program while abroad because of a physical (e.g.: mobility, hearing, visual or chronic systemic condition), or hidden disability (e.g., ADHD, learning, psychological condition), please obtain a letter from UCI disability services describing your needs. The best way to assure a successful stay abroad is to maintain communication with your IOP Program and UCI Disability Services.
IOP Fees
- For the term(s) you are on IOP, do not pay registration fees to UCI. Pay IOP Program fees directly to your sponsoring program.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
- All IOP students are strongly encouraged to apply for financial aid by completing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) even if they have never applied before or have never been awarded.

These students are eager to share their stories or answer any questions you may have about your country and program! You are strongly encouraged to contact these students to learn more about your country/program and to prepare for your time abroad!
Buddy List (optional)
- The Buddy List contains the names and contact information for UCI students going abroad who have authorized us to release their information to other students going abroad.
