EAP Country Report Instructions (non-major)

EAP COUNTRY REPORT INSTRUCTIONS

FOR STUDENTS NOT COMPLETING COURSEWORK IN THEIR MAJOR OR INTENDED CAREER WHILE ABROAD

DUE DATE: Monday (Tuesday if Monday is a holiday) of 9th week of the quarter prior to your departure.

Directions: Choose any topic of interest to you that relates to your host country. This can be your major, intended career, a hobby, or any other special interest. Use newspapers, reference books, the internet, people, etc. to research your topic. The report should be approximately 4 pages in length, typewritten in correct English*. Below are some suggestions of special interests:

  • A significant historical event
  • A significant contribution to society
  • A significant historical figure, why the person is important and what the impact is to this day
  • Immigration trends and their impact on the community
  • A recent or upcoming election and the impact it may have nationally or internationally
  • A current social problem/issue that the population is grappling with (e.g. poverty, immigration, public health, education, environmental protection, unemployment, etc.)
  • A significant sporting event or the importance of a certain sport to the people of the country.

See your EAP Advisor for further suggestions of appropriate paper topics, if needed.

We strongly recommend that you interview either a native of your host country or an American who has lived in your host country. If you do not know who to contact, refer to the Contacts List. The Contacts List contains contact information for both students who have returned from abroad and international (EAP Reciprocity) students from abroad who are currently studying at UCI. These students are eager to share their stories or answer any questions you may have about your country and program. Many of the international students who are here will be returning to their home country at the end of this year (possibly to the same university to which you will be going), allowing you to make friends with students there before you go. Connecting with these students NOW is the perfect way to get an "insider perspective" of living in your soon-to-be host country, and will make the transition into your "new life" abroad that much more enjoyable.

You may want to incorporate what you learn from your interviews into your Country Report (do not transcribe the interviews word for word).

The How to Prepare link to the left contains a lot of web sites you can use to learn about your host country, which can help you to complete your Country Project, especially Know Your Hosts and Travel Issues.

*NOTE: Academic dishonesty is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at the University of California, Irvine. Cheating, forgery, dishonest conduct, plagiarism (including copying text directly from the Internet), and collusion in dishonest activities erode the University's educational, research, and social roles. In such cases, sanctions, as described in Section 105.00 of the Policies Applying to Campus Activities, Organizations, and Students will be applied.
