Job Description:
Peer Advisors (PA) at the UCI Study Abroad Center are UCI students who have returned from study, work, internship, volunteer, research or teaching programs in a foreign country. Peer Advisors assist the Study Abroad Center with outreach, publicity, and advising for the various opportunities abroad that are available to UCI students.
Positions available are:
- 12 Generalist Peer Advisors
- 3 Front Desk Peer Advisors
**Students with work-study awards are strongly encouraged to apply**
Preference is given to returnees from programs held during the academic year.
Training & Time Commitment:
- All Peer Advisors must be able to attend the entire week of training from September 12-16, 2011, 9am-1pm daily AND begin work the week of September 19, 2011 Welcome Week.
- Generalist Peer Advisors must be available to work Monday-Friday mainly between the hours of 9am-4pm (although certain work activities occur outside of these hours) for approximately 7-12 hours a week during Fall Quarter, 6-10 hours a week during Winter Quarter, and 4-8 hours a week during Spring Quarter. Number of hours scheduled depend on office needs AND your personal hours of availability.
- Front Desk Peer Advisors must be available to work Monday-Friday mainly between the hours of 9am-4pm approximately 15-20 hours per week for the full academic year. These Peer Advisors will work at the front desk the majority of their hours and will also do a limited amount of Generalist Peer Advisor duties.
Duties for Generalist Peer Advisors:
- Make presentations to classes, dorms and student groups
- Represent the Study Abroad Center at campus events and information tables
- Organize outreach and promotional strategies
- Post fliers around campus
- Advise prospective students interested in opportunities abroad, either individually or in a group setting
- Assist students in understanding application and pre-departure processes
- Assist with pre-departure orientations
- Coordinate events
- Assist with maintaining resource materials
- General office duties (i.e. filing and copying)
- Attend weekly Peer Advisor meetings
Duties for Front Desk Peer Advisors:
- Serve as one of three Peer Advisors responsible for being the welcoming “first contact” at the Study Abroad Center’s front desk. In this role you will have a high level of student contact with a chance to “change a life” everyday. You will also learn a lot about how the Study Abroad Center functions and operates behind the scenes.
- Respond to questions from individuals who walk in or call, and refer them to appropriate resources or to their next step in the process
- Respond to emails that come to the main Study Abroad Center email inbox
- Assist students in understanding application and pre-departure processes
- Schedule appointments with Staff Advisors
- Various administrative duties (i.e. working with computer databases, record keeping - hard copy and electronic.)
- Several Generalist Peer Advisor duties as listed above
- Attend weekly Peer Advisor meeting
- Attend weekly meeting with Front Desk supervisor
Experiences and Skills Required for All:
- Previous experience abroad - study, work, internship, volunteer, research and/or teaching.
- Strong public speaking skills (50% of job)
- Ability to communicate complex information and processes
At Least One of the Below is Also Required:
- Customer service experience
- Peer advising experience
- Experience organizing events
- Experience independently carrying out projects
- Web editing experience
- Marketing experience
Pay Rate:
$9.10 per hour.

The Peer Advisor Application consists of the following items, all of which must be submitted by the deadline:
- On-line Application and Questions. NOTE: Given that you cannot save/exit the online application and that the system may time you out early, you are encouraged to write your responses in a word document and then copy/paste your responses into the appropriate fields when you are ready to submit. The on-line application is PC-compatible, but some students have encountered problems when using a Mac. You are welcome to use the computers in the Study Abroad Center Library to complete the application, if needed.

- Two References (work references are preferred).
- Anteaters Abroad Post. Complete this brief assignment: Imagine you only have one brief opportunity to tell students at UCI what your study abroad experience meant to you, and why you think they should study abroad too! What would you say? Go to our Anteaters Abroad fanpage on Facebook: www.facebook.com/anteatersabroad and do ONE of the following:
- Post a brief 1-3 sentence comment on the Anteaters Abroad wall telling UCI students where you went abroad, what it meant to you, and why you recommend it. Along with the comment, attach a photo of you doing something abroad that you could not have done here at UCI. OR
- Post a video, blog, or prezi, etc. that you created while abroad showcasing your experience(s). OR
- Create and post a 1-2 minute YouTube video telling UCI students where you went abroad, what it meant to you, and why you recommend it.
Applicants who are selected for an interview will be contacted via e-mail or phone within 2 weeks after the application deadline. Note: If you are selected for an interview, be prepared to give specific examples demonstrating the relevant skills you possess and how you have acquired them.
