"International travel is of immeasurable value for developing a well-informed outlook, especially for a creative artist. What ultimately makes a musician interesting is not technical skill so much as awareness of and insight into the human condition. My own musical personality as a composer and performer has been most profoundly influenced by my studies and research in France, Spain and Korea and my travels to many other countries. I strongly encourage students to study abroad, whether it be to study in a particular institution, to learn about other kinds of music, or simply to gain a greater understanding of the world."
