EAP Planning for All Economics Majors

Why study Economics abroad?

"Every student of economics should seriously consider participating in EAP. Studying abroad allows students to broaden their academic horizons. They learn about the field of economics from an international perspective, developing a deeper understanding not only of the implications of increasing globalization, but also of how differences in political, policy, and other institutions matter for economic outcomes. At the same time, students sharpen their cross-cultural communication and problem-solving skills, making them better prepared for whatever careers they choose to pursue."

-Professor Michelle Garfinkel
Department of Economics

The study of economics abroad differs from that in the U.S. in that the emphasis is on depth while U.S. education emphasizes variety. Economics students in foreign countries often begin studying their major in high school and proceed to take upper division courses upon entrance at a university. Thus, UCI students who study abroad will have the opportunity to receive more in depth training while engaging in an overall enriching experience.

Many economics courses abroad require technical mathematics skill. For this reason, economics majors who wish to study economics overseas are urged to go in their junior or senior year after basic economics and math courses have been completed.
